make your own "flat" kids!
They fly for free and are very well-behaved.
What was the inspiration for our "Flat" Grand-kids?
Have you seen "Flat Stanley", the children's book by Jeff Brown? It's the first book in a delightful series about the adventures of a boy who was accidentally flattened.
|
Elementary teachers use "Flat Stanley" in a wide variety of fun and educational projects. (Children sometimes will mail Stanley to cities all over the country and world!)
|
Here are just a few of the many reasons why we enjoy our "Flat" (and real) Grand-kids.
Making people happy...
In every city we noticed people smiling or laughing when they saw our "Flat" Grand-kids. |
Meeting other travelers...
We were videotaped by this friendly couple. They plan to make their own (seven!) "Flat" grand-kids. |
Learning about the world...
Our grandsons (ages 6 and 4) look forward to reading the stories of their travels over and over again. |
Our "Flat" Grand-kids have also traveled to Arizona, Greece and the New England States.
(Note that these are the younger versions!)

If you would like to have your own "Flat" Kids, they are easy to make...
1. Using white tag-board, cut out the pattern(s). These can be found on the "Flat Stanley" website or you can design your own. Keep them under 12 inches in length.
|
2. Get a really clear photo, about 3" in height, of both the front and back of the child's head. Cut the photos out and rubber cement these on the tag-board pattern.
|
3. Design some colorful clothes and attach these to the the pattern. Use a Sharpie to outline hands and other details. Remember to add their name and shoes.
|
4. Laminate your "Flat" kid(s). Leave an outside margin of about 1/8" when cutting the excess laminate away. They can be kept in a zip-lock freezer bag and placed inside a backpack or purse.

Our Newest Grandchild!
And, a shameless ploy to include this adorable girl on our website.
Avery was born in August and was a bit too young to travel this time around! In the future, we'll be adding her
(and maybe others?) to the "Exciting Adventures of Our Flat Grand-kids"!

THANK YOU!
We would like to thank our good friends, Sandi and Steve Lehnhard, for their support and encouragement during the process of creating this website. Over the years, our two families have had wonderful vacations together, in both the United States and Europe. (We especially enjoyed our "Best of Britain" and "Best of Eastern Europe" tours.)
In the future, the Colbornes and Lehnhards look forward to traveling on more Rick Steves' tours!

And now, as our journey together has finally come to an end, there is just one last thing to say!
"ADIOS, AMIGOS... WE'LL BE BACK SOMEDAY!"
